Having a little fun with watercolors. I’ve been seeing a lot of doodley quotes on Pinterest lately and had been itching to make one myself. :) The quote is by Daphne du Maurier.I painted it very lightly with yellow and then went in with the other colors. My surface was a piece of cardstock I’d cut specifically to use for doodling a bookmark—not an ideal surface for watercolor, but the bookmark is just for personal use, and I wasn’t feeling picky. Honestly, it held up better than I expected: no color bleeding through the other side.
By Kelsey Hamersley. Painted with colored inks, using a brush. April 2013.
I decided to experiment with inks a little, since I haven’t used them much in washes and have, for the most part, stuck with dip pens. I didn’t mix the inks at all before painting, just added layers of washes (in yellow, red, violet, blue, and green) and some brushed line work in black. Consequently, there are a lot of colors in there! It is cool, though, because standing further away from the drawing, they blend together into more recognizably “pineapple” colors.
Carnations by Kelsey Hamersley. Pen & ink (using dip pen) and watercolor. February 2013.
This marks the second time I’ve visited my sister and her husband’s house and painted her flowers. (The first being back in October.) Hey, it’s a good way to commemorate the occasion. Flowers will wilt.
Eggs by Kelsey Hamersley. Pen & ink using dip pen, and watercolor. January 2013.

A color study for East of the Sun and West of the Moon, the part where the bear takes her to visit her family. The proportions aren’t great, nor is her face—I wasn’t really using reference photos—but it’s a start on keying in the composition/style/color scheme I’m going for.
So one Sunday the White Bear came and said now they could set off to see her father and mother. Well, off they started, she sitting on his back; and they went far and long. At last they came to a grand house, and there her brothers and sisters were running about out of doors at play, and everything was so pretty, ‘twas a joy to see.
Quoted from The Blue Fairy Book by Andrew Lang. I’m working on my own retelling of the fairy tale, something not nearly that flowery. ;)
Coaster set by Kelsey Hamersley. Acrylic. December 2012.
A Christmas present for my sister. She just got married in August (I used the wedding colors, yellow and gray), and with her across the country starting her own home with her husband, I thought it’d be neat to put some love-centered quotes on the backs of the coasters. My Pinterest boards have amassed enough quotes by now that I had plenty to choose from. ;) The set was wooden; I mostly freehanded it (also made up a lot of it as I went along!) and sealed it with Mod Podge.
Castle by Kelsey Hamersley. Acrylic. September 2011.
I’ve posted a picture of this before, but finally took a better one, sans the frame.
